FLAX SEEDS
Flax seeds, also known as linseeds, are small oil seeds that have gained popularity due to their numerous health benefits, including their potential role in cancer prevention and treatment.
Benefits in Fighting Cancer
Inhibition of Cancer Cell Growth:
Flaxseed oil and its components have been shown to inhibit the growth of various cancer cell lines, including breast cancer and melanoma cells. This inhibition is often dose-dependent and involves mechanisms such as apoptosis (programmed cell death) and disruption of mitochondrial function.
Reduction in Tumor Growth and Metastasis:
Studies have demonstrated that dietary flaxseed can reduce the growth and spread of tumors in animal models. For example, a study on mice showed that flaxseed reduced the growth rate of human breast cancer cells and decreased the incidence of metastasis.
Enhancement of Chemotherapy Efficacy:
Flaxseed and its lignans have been found to enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy drugs. This is particularly relevant for breast cancer treatment, where flaxseed has been shown to maintain or increase the effectiveness of tamoxifen, a common chemotherapy drug.
